Membership of the national insurance scheme is the key to your entitlements from NAV. ( the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration) You do not have to bea Norwegian citizen, registered with the National Population Register or pay taxes in Norway. What is crucial is that your residence in Norway is lawful. For more information follow this link:

Housing allowance
Housing allowance is a government financial support scheme. The purpose of the scheme is to help households with low incomes and high housing expenses to obtain or/and continue to live in good-quality housing. If your child/children have joined you here, you might be entitled support from Statens Husbank to cover some of your rent. There are certain requirements to your housing that has to be met to be eligible for housing allowance. In short these are:
- the living space must be at least 40m2
- separate bedroom, kitchen and living room
How to apply
There are monthly decisions and payments in housing allowances. The application deadline is the 14th every month and the payment is due approximately the 10th of the following month.
The following documents are required in the application:
-a complete application form
-copy of your housing contract (which should state your rent)
-copy of your child/childrens birth certificates-

In general, working in Norway requires some understanding of the Norwegian language. If your language skills are poor, the main jobs offered will be as a cleaner, unless you have an education and skills that make you attractive to international companies.
The Career Service Centre offers students counselling regarding job opportunities. They are located on the top floor at the Student Centre.
NAV (the Norwegian Work and Welfare Administration) will be able to assist you in finding a job.
