General Practitioners
Information about General Practitioners in Norway
The medical part of the Norwegian Public Health Services is divided into three different stages of service. The first stage is to contact the General Practitioner (GP) for an appointment. The waiting time for an appointment will probably vary from a few days up to four weeks. The GP's job is to carry out an examination, give advice, and treatment. The GP is the one who decides whether he himself will continue with medical treatment or if you should be referred to a specialist (second stage) , e.g. gynecologist, or to a hospital (third stage) if needed.
In order to apply for a General Practitioner, you need to have an ID number.
Who can apply for an ID number?
If you have a permission to stay in Norway for at least six months or if you are an European Union member.
